Smoke Alarms

Since 1997 there has been a requirement by law (the Building Code of Australia) that all new properties and all properties that have undergone significant renovations, have a mains powered smoke alarm installed.

From October 2009 a mains powered smoke alarm must be installed in all residential buildings prior to sale and when a new tenancy agreement is signed (for rental properties). If there has been no new tenancy agreement then a mains powered smoke alarm must have been installed by October 2011.

Whilst mains powered smoke alarms are the preference, there are situations where you can install an approved battery powered smoke alarm.
